Learn What Goes Into the Price of Three Wedding-Day Earrings

With a fine jewelry pedigree spanning five generations, it’s safe to say the Bock family knows a thing or two about making your special occasions sparkle. Since 1977, the team at Bachendorf’s, their family-run Dallas institution, has been helping brides find the just-right pieces to mark one of life’s biggest milestones. “We are in the business of putting smiles on people’s faces,” says Bachendorf’s’ Fal- lon Bock. “Each bride is unique in what they want, but every bride has the same glow about them during the process.” Of course, prices can vary significantly based on a number of factors. Fallon breaks it all down.

Budget Under $10,000

  • Small But Mighty Though these earrings contain 404 diamonds between them, the smaller size of stone and overall carat weight helps keep the price accessible. “These earrings have a ton of diamonds for the price!” says Fallon. “They’re super fun, wearable, and give the client a statement piece.”

  • Quality Over Quantity Besides their considerable size, all four primary stones in these drop earrings are GIA-certified VVS in clarity, which Fallon notes “is considered very high quality.” The nearly flawless diamonds command a higher price.
  • Matchy Matchy Finding stones that mirror each other exactly requires time and skill. “Matching four emerald-cut diamonds varying in size is an artform in itself,” says Fallon.
  • Get Crafty Creating fine jewelry requires a great deal of time, skill, and craftmanship—all of which is reflective in the price tag. The Bachendorf’s team maps each original design to the millimeter, then sends it to a casting house where a casting is created specifically to suit the selected stones. Finally, Fallon says, “One of our master jewelers sets each stone one by one, making sure each prong is securely attached to the stone.”

Budget Under $100,000

  • Size Matters Simply put, the size and overall weight of the diamonds is the major price driver here. Compared to the feather set, which boasts a total weight of 2.83 carats, Fallon says, “This set has 28 pear-shaped diamonds weighing 13.27 carat total weight and 14 marquise shaped diamonds weighing 3.42 total weight,” for a total of nearly 17 carats.
