We spoke with two DFW wedding experts about what unique details and personal touches can help make guests feel welcomed and involved throughout the day. Ricardo Thomas, a local wedding planner, advises all couples to first consider the key elements they want at their wedding to celebrate their diverse backgrounds. He also encourages his couples to consider having a bilingual wedding website so that guests RSVP with ease and receive the details they need prior to the big day. And when designing invitations, providing translations between each line can help cater to all your guests.

Ricardo also gives three major tips for incorporating a second language into your ceremony proceedings:

• Translate your readings. If your ceremony will be conducted entirely in a single language, think about providing written translations of your vows or readings so those who are not native speakers can follow along. Consider asking a family member or friend who is bilingual for help with the translations rather than using an internet translation tool to ensure the meaning comes across correctly.
• Consider a bilingual officiant. If a large number of your guests do not speak the same language, it may be worth considering hiring a bilingual officiant or translator to provide a live translation of the ceremony.
• Use signage. Including both languages on signs throughout your ceremony and reception may go a long way. It can allow guests to feel welcome and prevent them from getting lost. You can choose to add a translation on signage or create signage with a recognized symbol that everybody can understand.

Bilingual wedding DJ Nate Acosta also shares the importance of connecting with your guests through music. “As a DJ, it’s valuable to know the difference between Latin music and a Latin wedding,” he says. “Learning about traditions and how to effortlessly incorporate them takes time. Knowing which cumbia is going to remind a bride or groom of their mother cleaning in the mornings is a special knowledge not every DJ will have.” Understanding the cultural significance of the music is important to him, as it can aid in the creation of a playlist that not only reflects the couple’s heritage but also creates a lively atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Nate also highlights the value of working with vendors that share this idea of wanting to honor a couple’s diverse cultures genuinely.
